At Honerkamp, we stock a number of popular species in solid wood planks. Carefully selected mills that understand the value and richness of natural solid hardwoods supply our lumber. Our lumber is graded to an industry standard governed by the National Hardwood Lumber Association. All our lumber is inspected and sold on the basis of rules for the measurement and inspection of these products as established by the Association.

Now FSC Certified Lumber is Available!

We presently stock the following species in rough and dressed cuts:

Product Terms

Rough: Boards that are rough sawn just as they come from the mill. These are full thickness boards you can surface, as you like. (ex. 4/4 board will measure 1” thick on a rough plank)
Dressed: Boards which have been smooth sanded in some way. Sanding reduces the actual board thickness (ex. 4/4 board will measure 13/16” thick on a dressed plank)
S2S
(Smooth Two Sides):
These boards have been planed to provide two smooth sides. See our stock list for the Net Dimension.
FAS: This term, originated from a combination of the very old grade of "Firsts" and the grade of "Seconds," is the highest grade of hardwood lumber. Most FAS lumber is exported rather than cut in the U.S. as its value, kiln-dried, is highly valued.
Measuring: By tradition, the thickness of hardwood lumber is stated in terms of quarter inch increments (“Quarters”) in the rough state before any surface finishing is completed. For example, a 4/4 (four quarter) board is 1" thick as is comes from the mill. After surfacing to S2S, this board will be 13/16" thick but it will still be described as a 4/4 board. Now it’s a 4/4 board, S2S.
Board Foot:

The unit of measurement for hardwood lumber (bd.ft. or BF). A board foot is the amount of lumber in a board one foot long, one foot wide, and one inch thick before milling. The formula for determining the board feet in a board is:

(Width in inches x length in feet x thickness in inches) / 12 = BF

For example:
a board 8" wide, 12’ long and 1" thick would contain 8 board feet.
(8" wide x 12’ long x 1" thick) / 12 = 8 board feet.
